Yeah, while it gets points for trying to put more of a personal spin on the story, it works better in an episodic format.

I recommend you check out the manga too. If you thought the Jack Ill Dark showdown was messed up, just wait till you get to the Satanic Emperor arc. That's right-they manage a tournament storyline.
